Stopping by the grocery store on his way home from work isn’t unusual. In fact, it is the norm considering her disdain for kitchen duties. He already has in mind what he is going to prepare for tonight’s dinner and realizes how pleased she’ll be that he is taking the initiative to prepare a gourmet meal.
Thinking of the smile on her face and the loving praise from her lips spurs him on.
As he enters the store he passes a stand of fresh cut flowers and quickly scans the brightly colored bouquets. “She would love those,” he thinks to himself, “but that’s so cliché.” And, at ten bucks his practical side takes over and he walks on.
Focusing on the dinner he wants to prepare, he continues to think of what she would like and how he can make it special—perhaps a bottle of her favorite wine to accompany the meal. After carefully selecting the ingredients and choosing a wine he heads for the check out. Still he isn’t satisfied. What more can he do to show her how much he adores her? He contemplates going back for the flowers, but then he spies the locked display case in front of the store. A huge grin spreads across his face. He will surprise her with a pack of those skinny cigars she likes so much.
“I’ll take a pack of those peach-flavored Phillies.” The checkout clerk doesn’t know the cigars are for his wife and that makes it a little bit naughty.
The anticipation of greeting her with the groceries in hand and a thoughtful gift uplifts his spirit as he picks up the bags of groceries. Confidently he strides to his car, thinking of how much she will enjoy his surprise. It makes a man’s heart sing.
You know her better than anyone else, so give your girl what she really wants. Don’t worry about it being out of the norm.
